Using HTML In Your Email Marketing Campaign

Using HTML in your Autoresponders offers several advantages:
  • Your letters can be customized to include colors, graphics, tables, etc...
  • You can embed tracking codes to track your results.
  • You can simply create links to words and phrases which looks better than typing in full URL's in the body of your letter.

The challenge comes from the fact that there are many popular email programs that block images and some HTML by default. Your goal is to keep your HTML as clean as possible so it doesn't get blocked by some of the more popular email systems such as:
  • Microsoft Outlook
  • Mozilla Thunderbird (unless you as the sender are already in their Personal Address Book)
  • AOL (for non whitelisted senders or sender IP's that are not on the enhanced whitelist. TrafficWave.net is whitelisted.)
  • Yahoo (for messages that Yahoo's SpamGuard believes are spam)
  • Hotmail (for messages in Junk folder)
  • Gmail

So how do you overcome these potential obstacles? Here are some simple steps that can help your messages get through:
  1. Avoid making your message too dependent on images. Images can be fine when they are used to reinforce solid ad copy. But if your images are blocked, your message could end up looking broken into sections, chunky, and just hard to read. Use images with caution.

  2. Give readers an online version: You may want to save the information you are sending to readers as an article on your web site. Add a link that says:

Can't read this message? Click here.

    OR

    Read this article online.

You may want to consider giving your readers just a few lines from the article and then a link to read the full article. This has been a very effective technique for me.

An added benefit to this approach is that you get more quality visitors directly to your web site because they will be visiting your site to read your articles.

  3. TEST Your Messages. Set up your own free email accounts at the major web-based ISPs:

    • Yahoo
    • Hotmail
    • AOL
    • Gmail

Test your messages to each account by subscribing these addresses to your Autoresponders. Leave all settings at their defaults. This will let you see what your subscribers see... especially those who donŐt know or donŐt care how to adjust their email settings.. Then, make whatever changes you feel are necessary to your messages.
