Do Pop-Up Ads Really Work?
By Brian Rooney

I'm sure you've run across pop-up windows of all sorts as you surf the Internet. Most of the time, you probably do what I do: Mutter something under your breath and close the window as fast as you can.

But... every once in a while... you see one that catches your eye and you take a look to see what it's all about. And there you are... the pop-up window worked. It got your attention and that was the whole point of the ad.

Personally, I close 99% or more of the pop-up windows that come up on my browser. But like you... every once in a while... one will catch my eye for one reason or another.

And this brings me to the point of the article.

What made that pop-up window stand out above the rest?

Why did we hang around on that page longer than others?

99 times out of 100, it had something to do with the headline.

We surf the net just like we read the newspaper or our favorite magazine. We glance quickly at whatever page we are on to see if something catches our eye. If it does not, we move on. But if the headline catches our eye, we read the first line or two so we can see if this is any thing worth reading.

Newspaper editors and magazine publishers know this. That is why they spend so much time on getting the headline right.

Good ad copy writers know this too. That's why a good ad copy writer will spend a LOT of time on the headline. In fact, some of the best copy writers say that they spend MOST of their time on the headline.

Why?

If the headline doesn't grab their attention, the rest of the ad copy won't matter.... because nobody will be reading it.

It is the same with using "Guaranteed Traffic" packages to promote your site. Your site can pop up in front of millions of surfers but if the headline doesn't make them want to stop and read the rest of your offer, you just wasted your time and probably some of your hard earned money.

The best way to promote your offer through pop-up ads is to use a page that literally SCREAMS out the best benefit your site has to offer the reader.

A weight loss site might have big bold letters that say simply:

"LOSE WEIGHT NOW... CLICK FOR FREE INFO".

When the reader clicks the link, they would be taken to the site that makes the actual sales presentation and offer. That way, by the time they get to your main site, you KNOW they are interested in at least learning more about your offer.

I ran a test a while back where I ran two pop-up ad campaigns to two different sites.

Campaign #1 went to my main sales page where I had some GREAT information and some very helpful tips along with links to more information, order forms, etc...

Campaign #2 went to a web page that simply said:

---

HOW TO DOUBLE YOUR ONLINE SALES:
FREE REPORT SHOWS YOU HOW.

---

Campaign #1 resulted in ZERO sales out of 25,000 pop-ups.

Campaign #2 resulted in over 100 sales leads. I closed about 30 of them over the next week or two by using my Autoresponder.

Both campaigns ran at the same time. Both campaigns used the exact same advertising resource. The only difference was the pages themselves.

So how do you put this information to good use?

If you have your own web site and you can create your own web pages, the rest is easy. Simply create a simple web page with a POWERFUL headline and start advertising.

Make sure your headline is designed to ATTRACT visitors. The point is to make them want to learn more so use this headline to tell them your biggest benefit.

"LOSE WEIGHT NOW"
"HOW TO MAKE MORE MONEY ONLINE"
"HOW TO SELL LIKE THE BIG DOGS"
"HOW TO SAVE MONEY ON YOUR TAXES"
Etc...

Link that page to your main web site so that when people ARE interested, they just click through to your main page and your site can take over from there with the presentation.

If you do not have your own web site, you can still use a free "mirror page" such as MySearchSite.net's FREE Web Card. Just go to http://www.mysearchsite.net/ and click on the link in the upper left corner... "FREE WEB CARD". It's FREE and makes a great way for non tech people like us to get a good headline working.

Once you are ready to test your headline, it's time to do a test run.

You may need to change your headline around a bit to get it just right. Once you have it down, and you are getting the response rate you need, just keep running pop-up ads!

Simple? Yes!

Easy? Not really. The best advertisers will spend some time testing various headlines before they find the "right" one.

Worth it? ABSOLUTELY!

Yours in success,
